The New York Fashion Week Spring 2019 Trends That You Should Be Buying Now

New York fashion week is coming to an end-so it’s a great time to see what the fashion trends are from the NYC runways to the streets. As a New Yorker and designer, it’s a great time to see what’s new, what’s still around, and what trends are out.

So what are the New York Fashion Trends for Spring 2019 and what should you be buying? Neon colors, bucket hats, feathers, ruffles, earth tones, netting, golden yellows, beach vibes, polka dots, scarves and scarf prints, bike shorts, tie dye, utility wear were all huge on the NYC Spring 2019 runways.

So what should you be buying? Buy what you love and mix them into your current wardrobe. Here’s a breakdown of the trends and some fun ways to wear them.

Neon Colors

It’s been so cold in New York during the shows that we saw a bevy of bright neon colors in most winter coats that hit the streets. This made it’s way onto the runway as well. It’s a great way to add brightness to a dreary day, it may even five you a much needed jolt of happiness. Paired with this earthy tone, this beauty looks great!

Ruffles and Feathers

Ruffles always signify femininity and spring. This season, ruffles get a kick of edge to create a more modern take on the classic fabric detail. You can definitely go traditional with it and pair it with more quintessentially feminine skirts, but for those more trendy days, try pairing it with something more unexpected.

Feathers are so fun and fluffy to play with. They make me want to dance. We saw them on the runway on skirt hems, jackets, blouses and just about anywhere they could go. I wore a feather trim dress as my party dress at my wedding. I paired it with feather trimmed shoes and danced the night away!

Earth Tones

This trend is nothing new, but earth tones are traditional for the fall. Spring typically brings about more vibrant, punchy colors. NIC TIP: Transition some of your fall pieces to the spring, and be one with the earth.

Netting

Netting is like a larger hole fishnet or mesh. So you want to treat it the same way. Think fishnet overlayed on top of silk slip dresses or skirts. Fun, now, and fresh. Pair silk tanks with netted tops and jeans or with linen slacks. Perfect when running around the town or on vacay. Netted dresses will add a fun approach to an evening look. If there’s fringe on the bottom, you’ve just elevated that look one more notch.

Golden Yellows

We’re still influence by Beyonce’s lemonade album, and the runway was filled with it for spring. Talk about making lemonade out of lemons. This fun vibrant color was seen on everything from trenches, to skirts, to shoes and bags. It’s going to be a fun way to pop color into an outfit. If you normally use red, pink or orange to add color to your look, think about adding a touch of yellow instead.

Beach Vibes

It’s spring, so it means that summer is around the corner. So it makes sense, that a beachy boho vibe would be present at the runway shows. We saw a more relaxed approach to resort wear from many brands. Be chic with it. It’s effortless, and fun and not too over thought.

Polka Dots

A classic pattern in the design world  that never goes out of fashion. So when you get that polka dot piece that you love, when the trend passes, put it in the back of your closet because this trend always comes back.

NIC TIP: similar to polka dots, stripes, plaids are classic patterns that you should never get rid of. If and when the trend passes, just put it aside until it comes back. They ALWAYS do.

Scarves and Scarf Prints

This is going to be fun to pair with the golden yellow trend or even the earth tone trend. Don’t over think it. When wearing a more basic outfit, wear a scarf around your waist as a belt, or go super traditional and wear it in your hair or around your neck. Choose silk scarves if wearing it the ore basic way.

Bike Shorts

This 90’s trend was brought back to life by non other than Kim Khardashian as the muse wearing Kanye West’s fashions. The trick here is to pair it with an oversized jacket, blouse, or netted top. Play with proportions here. On vacay, it’s going to be super cute with a netted top over your bikini top and your bike shorts. In the city, wear your favorite oversized denim jacket and sneakers or oversized blazer with heels while letting the sidewalks be your runway. Note that these shorts can be all lengths, but longer seems to be more of the trend, so you can see it peeking from underneath that oversized top.

Tie Dye

You or your mom probably have some tie dye stuff tucked away somewhere, pull it out! This is one of those in-again-out again trends that may be worth hanging onto if you get a great piece. With such a long stint in the minimalistic phase, designers are ready to have fun again, and I’m here for it.

Utility Wear

For me this is not a personal fav, but we’re seeing it. My preference is to use this in accessories, think shoes, belts, bags-as opposed to my clothing. But I have seen some fun takes on how to wear it from designers like Dries Van Noten, Givenchy, and Loewe. The trick (imo) is to have it look more tailored and refined, instead of straight from the front line. Think safari.

NIC TIP: keep your proportions in mind here and use earth tones that are opposite of what you would find in actual combat gear.

Minimalism is finding its way out as a trend, and designers are taking on more bold aesthetics. This is so evident by the amount of bold colors, fabric manipulation, and patterns we’ve seen this far for fashion month. They kept the neutral colors, but focused on details and fabric interest when using them. Don’t get rid of your neutrals though, they’re still here, just in a different way. Instead, add a few of these new trends and resurgent styles to your existent look for a fresh, update for Spring 2019.

Stay tuned to Tie Sides and Scoops for the trends we notice at the London shows starting tomorrow, 2/15 and the Milan shows later in the month.
