The Friend Series: Actress Denise Poole

Have you ever wondered how an actor/actress gets into that profession? Here at Tie Sides and Scoops, we definitely have; our love of popcorn means that we watch movies a lot. We recently had the chance to sit down and talk with our friend, Denise Poole, acclaimed actress, screen writer, producer and overall awesome person. I met Denise through her jewelry line, Unicorn Jewels a couple of years ago. When I found out she was also an actress, I wanted to work with her in that capacity too….except I’m not an actress 🙂 so the next best thing was to interview her for “The Friend Series”.

Denise is known for her roles in films like: “Undead Space Invading Ninjas”, “Love & Voodoo”,  “California Roll”, “Defending Santa” and countless other modern day sci-fi movies. With such a tricky industry to break into, Denise helped us answer some questions we’ve been wondering about the film industry. See what she has to say below!

TS&S:  How did you get into acting?

Denise: I went to a private school growing up, and it was heavily focused on arts, that is where I got my start acting. I loved it since I was a kid and have been performing since I was 6 years old!

TS&S: What do you know now, that you wish you knew about the industry when you first started out?

Denise: That this is a business just as much and if not more than an art, and it’s important to learn those skills as well if you are going to be successful in a long-term acting career.

TS&S: How do you know if a role is right for you? If it feels forced, it’s not for you.

Denise: I don’t believe in saying yes to everything and anything just because you may want exposure or experience. Quality over quantity.

TS&S: How do you prepare for a kiss scene?

Denise: I think the less prep the better hahaha. A kiss in film is nothing like one in real life, but if it’s not premeditated too much, it can still be organic. Often there are more than a dozen people in your personal space when the scene takes place so you’re really sharing an intimate moment with everyone, which makes it not that intimate after all. It’s all very calculated, so the prep needs to be done in your character work beforehand.

TS&S: Top 5 fav movies of all time?

Denise: Well, without a doubt, The Matrix Trilogy is my number one fav. I am a huge fan of both theTomb Raider and Underworld series. Drive, Nightcrawler, Cloud Atlas, Interstellar are standouts too.

TS&S: Pls share a fun fact about you that not many people know 🙂

Denise: Well, not many people know that my private school was actually a strict Christian school where I sat in a cubicle for most of the day. We weren’t allowed to speak to anyone. There were no teachers for any academic subjects, you taught yourself and marked your own tests and communicated by putting up a flag. And if you think that was bad, my mom was my gym teacher and our gym was carpeted!! Super fun fact lol.
