Yesterday at 9 pm, history was made.
Pose is a new show of FX centered around a group of people of color within the LGBTQ+ community in 1987 New York. I already knew this show would be poppin’ but I couldn’t help but feel a little anxious given the representation of this community in the past. I was nervous that this would be another dub despite the authenticity of its character who were played by actual trans women of color. But I was proven wrong last night within the first thirty seconds.
The characters alone were fucking fabulous. From the cold-hearted queen that is Elektra to the angelic firecracker that is Angel, no one was left in the dust. They were funny and honest and real and just overall wonderful.
The issues that are addressed in the show were non-stop. One after the other there was something that needed to be talked about and was. It was never too much, which would be disrespectful to say because this show is centered around the lives of these people who very much get more than their share on a daily basis, but heartbreaking. I had to stop myself from crying every 5 minutes because of what was happening, and I never cry.
Overall, this show is the best thing that’s graced my TV in a minute and you’d be a fool not to watch! It’s a peek into a world that many shun, are apart of, or are an ally to. It’s beautifully written and filmed and deserves all the attention in the world.
