In honor of Pride month and the upcoming Pride week in New York, I thought it’d be fitting to share a few sources and such to get the ball rolling. Personally, I’ve never been to Pride, but damn am I excited. I think something to remember going into such an important event (if you’re straight) is that you’re an ally. This isn’t about you but your friends/family/co-workers/etc. a part of that community. No one cares about your cis-hetero experiences – this is a time for members of the LGBTQ+ to celebrate themselves, not an Instagram opportunity. With that being said, let’s get into it.
It’s The Little Things
No one is asking you to go out and shove a rainbow flag up your ass to show you support the LGBTQ+ community. It’s the little things that matter, like hanging up flags that coincide with the community to show you’re an ally. Volunteer at LGBTQ+ based organizations to help those who aren’t as fortunate as others, as fortunate as you. You don’t have to put on a production to show you care, just show you care.
Things To Do …
There are tons of events you can go to during Pride Week. I looked at the NYC Pride website and found a list of things you can participate in for the week —> https://www.nycpride.org/events/. There is also information as to how you can become a volunteer for Pride week on their website —> https://www.nycpride.org/volunteer/. Also, don’t be afraid to donate!
