Muse Me

As a designer, I draw inspiration from the world around now. Now that I am working on a new collection, well technically my first collection that will launch in a few months, I’m feeling all sorts of emotions. I’m anxious, I’m excited, I’m nervously impatient, I’m hungry for years of my hard work to be visible in stores. But how do I get there? Where does it all start? I get asked this question by people who don’t work in industry and honestly, the process is different for each designer. Since it’s an art, and we create, all designers will approach their art from a different point of view.

For me, I have to be moved. I have to organically be inspired. I don’t like to be inspired by another designers work, although sometimes it inadvertently happens. I like to be inspired by the world around me. Trees, and leaves, and colors, and sometimes even sound all inspire me. Buckles on a belt inspire me, or maybe even buttons or pockets. Different design details like pleats and ruffles inspire me too. Once I get this “eureka” moment idea in my head, then I’m able to sketch. I cannot sketch without the idea-it’s sort of like the pencil moves because of the ideas; if that makes any sense.

Next, I don’t show a soul my ideas. Not even my mom. They are the purest things I’ve ever known as an artist. They are not up for discussion or opinions. Period. From here I go through a process of changing this and adding that and re-sketching to suit my personal desires. I then make a pattern, cut fabric, and sew a sample. *in rare moments, I just get an idea, cut fabric and sew a sample. Those moments feel magical and literally, an idea is born into a tangible object in hours. It’s very cathartic.

Finally, I wear it. Then the compliments roll in. That, is the best gift of all. Visit my site: Nager By Nic Hyl www.nagerbynichyl.com. Nager (pronounced Na-Jay, French for swim.)
