Mean Girls on Broadway

This past weekend I had the pleasure of going to go see one of my favorite movies on Broadway. I was a little skeptical going into this because, when you love something, it’s difficult not compare it to the original. However, I was optimistic (maybe too optimistic) because it was on Broadway!

Before …

The atmosphere before the show started was amazing. The decor they created for the show was tailored perfectly to what we would be seeing. Pink doors with scribbly handwriting all over them were what I saw while waiting in line to go inside. The merch table set up with eye-catching t-shirts and souvenirs awaited us as soon as we walked in and as we sat down, we noticed the stage was lit up with pages from what seemed to be a more updated Burn Book. I was bouncing in my seat trying to contain the excitement for what they had in store. Would they deliver? Would I love it or spend too much time comparing it to the original? It had great reviews, so what was I nervous about? And then the lights dimmed …

During …

After the lights dimmed, the room was illuminated by bright pink lights from the giant screens on stage. Janis and Damien ran out, the beginnings of what I assumed would be the first song began to play, and they wasted no time in blowing me away with their voices. Then we got into the plot, which was iffy for me. You could tell, the entire time, that Tina Fey was trying to capture the essence of the movie while also trying to keep it modern. To make a long story short, it worked and it didn’t. There are lots of gems within the play, like the character of Regina George and Karen who was fucking amazing and Damien who was also fucking amazing, but in terms of the “big picture”, it was … okay. I don’t know if it’s a sign of the times or if my (very liberal) education skewed my take on the play, but a lot of the jokes were either kind of funny or just plain offensive. Not to mention the awkwardness of the situations these characters put themselves in.

After …

After the show had ended with a god awful “we’re all in this together” type of number, I felt a little shocked that this was what I’d been hyping up so much in my head. Maybe I put this show on such a high pedestal, I let that ruin the experience for me? I didn’t hate it, but it also wasn’t my favorite thing that I’d seen on Broadway. It was a fun musical with good music and excellent performances (for the most part) and I had a good time. I don’t think I’d recommend shelling out almost $100 to do so, but it’s a good show with fabulous gems within it!
