Here we are, 6 months later at Fashion Week NY. The importance of it all is more than you can imagine. These runway shows and the major designers that participate in them, define the trends, colors and energy we will see in all subsequent fashion brands and retailers at lower price points. It drives the direction of fashion for that season that is being showcased. In about a year, you’ll actually see the trends from these runway shows in more affordable brands and designers.
The street style, the looks and outfits that regular people wear to attend these runway shows, or to the events surrounding these runway shows, inspire the designers of the shows. Taking a look at the street style is just as critical a thing as the runway show themselves, except the street style comes first. If you pay attention, one can begin to see the trends emerge on the streets. These trends will be visible in runway shows for the following seasons.
Here’s some of the emerging trends, straight from the streets.
Comfy fashion: I’m seeing sneakers everywhere! Isabel Marant and her hidden wedge sneaker have spiraled into flat sneakers from brands like Adidas and Nike from the more athletic brands and Guisseppe Zanotti and Versace (to name a few) for the more high end brand. I see them everywhere I look. What is the most interesting thing about the trend is how they are being styled. No longer is it a very urban, tom-boy vibe, but instead I see t-shirts, beautiful lace skirts and shell toes (what the streets call the traditional Adidas sneakers), or dresses and very lady like looks styled with clunky, platform sneakers. The look is styled in a very juxtaposed way, and some how it works. The woman in New York are eating it up and I don’t think it’s going anywhere anytime soon.

Ladies Who Lunch: In fashion, trends are polarizing. So if on one end of the spectrum we have comfy fashion with sneakers and easy fitting clothes, the next logical trend would be very lady like outfits that are tailored and more “stiff”. What we’re also seeing is women taking the time to get ready, circa 1950’s. Full faces, full skirts, sky-high heels and tiny hand bags, with pouty red lips. It’s a bit refreshing when for so long, to look like this meant that you were a woman of means. Now, any woman can look this way and enjoy all that it entails-feminity at it’s finest.
