“I’m so tired”, “I didn’t sleep well last night”. How many times have any of you been guilty of theses phrases? I’m always tired. It’s to the point that I don’t even complain about it anymore because no one wants to hear it, but even if they did want to hear because I’m always tired, they’d hear it multiple times per day. No bueno.
So what gives? Well there are different reasons why you may be so sleepy all of the time. If you’re like me and running your own business, planning a wedding, working out and training for a competition, and just existing it could be a lot. But if your schedule is not so busy, but you are still often tired there could be legitimate reasons why…..and some easy ways to help fix them.
Of course if the problem is chronic, or you’re never able to get any quality rest, definitely reach out to your doctor. In the meantime, here are a few things you can try before you get your sleep check up.
Women need more sleep than men. Fact. Because of all of the things our bodies have to do that theirs don’t, we require more sleep than they do. So make sure you get it. If you can go to bed even a half hour earlier, it may make all the difference the next morning for you. A good way to determine how much sleep you need is to start off sleeping the recommended 8 hours. If you’re still sleepy when you wake up, add another 1/2 hour. Keep adding or subtracting in 1/2 hour increments until you find the perfect amount for you and your body.
Change your mattress. It’s recommended that we change our mattresses every 7-8 years. We are creatures of habit, and over time our mattresses will wear down in all the same “comfy” spots we naturally go to in our beds. Changing your mattress (and pillow) are a quick, albeit pricy way to instantly improve your sleep. I’m going to try this one for sure! Choose a mattress with a softness or firmness that you need for your body type.
Cool down. Studies show that the best temperature to sleep in is 61-65 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s right, keep it cool and you may improve your nights sleep. Apparently the body doesn’t like to be hot while sleeping. The cooler temps also aid in better breathing, which helps when we’re sleeping.
Sleep in little to no clothing. That’s right! our birthday suit is the best outfit to wear since we won’t be tangled in clothes that warm us up and prevent that cooler temperature that our bodies like.
Avoid bright lights. Our bodies are smarter than we are. Our brain actually looks for environmental clues that it’s time to go to bed. If you’re up reading and in bright light situations just before bed, you’re subconsciously telling your body that it’s time to be awake and not time to go to sleep. Try setting the mood by dimming the lights, and relaxing just before bed instead of sending that last email.
Take a bath. They’re so relaxing that you very well can que your body to relax and set the sleepy mood. If for no other reason you probably deserve one!
Put the kids to bed at their bed time. So many woman devote all of their home time to their kids. That’s great. But if you’re not at your best, you can’t give your best to your kids. Come up with a bed time for the little’s that works for your household and stick to it-every night even on the weekends. It gives you dedicated time each night for you, your kids will have a routine that gives them structure and it allows you to get to bed earlier.
