Dear Selena Quintanilla-Pérez,
On this day, you would’ve been 47 years old and it breaks my heart knowing that you were taken from us so soon. It’s a selfish thing to say, I know, but it’s true. I grew up watching your biopic and fell in love with you. I remember watching the movie as a little girl, not really knowing what was going on, and how captivated I was by your story. It quickly became one of my favorite movies, and as I grew up with it, I grew up with your story – learning along the way that this was not just some Hollywood blockbuster but a visual tale of a star who was snubbed before she could truly shine.
You inspired me to be kind and courageous. You taught me elegance and beauty that’s best when found within. You captivated me and captured my heart while doing so (no pun intended) all the while empowering me more than you can imagine. My dream was to meet you, maybe give you a hug and to tell you how much I love you and how unexpectedly important you’ve become to me. Growing up and realizing that that wasn’t an option just made it sting a little more with each time I watched your movie or listened to a song of yours.
I’m writing this now from a place of eternal admiration and fondness because you showed me that I can be whatever I want to be as long as I stay true to myself. Thank you. Thank you for all that you’ve done and all that you continue to do. You’ll live forever – way past me, and I hope that people will love and appreciate you just as much as they did when you were alive and afterward. Happy Birthday to my fellow Aries queen, I love you.
