Fashion month is over and I was invited to a discussion with WWD editors, hosted by Fashion Group International at The Fashion Institute of Technology, reviewing the top trends from New York, London, Milan, Paris plus the couture shows, aka Fashion Month. What did they have to say when looking at the month in review?
Similar to my recap on the New York shows (see my post from February on New York Fashion Week), the team at WWD recommend all of those trends, plus added some suggestions on color, makeup, nails, menswear, and refinement.
Discussion with WWD at F.I.T. on Fashion Month 2109
Color Trends
One of the first topics that popped up was color. Sophia Chabbott, WWD’s digital director talked about the pink trend. But not your cutesy pink that’s for ladies who lunch. But the power pink. The badass pink you wear with black to express your femininity and how cool you are.

Makeup and Nails
WWD prestige beauty & digital editor, Alexa Tietjen talked about all of the beauty trends she saw on the collective runways. From nail art by Nails By Mei, to mascara, eyeliner, lipsticks and wigs.
She noticed that the traditional “natural look” wasn’t employe so much by designers this season. My opinion, is that it has something to do with the refinement trend. Because so many designers are opting for a polished look, they are going more glam with makeup and nails.
Tietjen even noticed that the models were in full mani and pedi, something that’s not typically done because of the multiple outfit chnages and how long it takes nails to dry. Suggesting that the designers are also nodding towards a more polished, complete look from head to toe.
Menswear
For menswear trends the team talked about how leather and grunge and a gentlemen trend are all making a resurgence. Leather blazers and sweat pants, grungy plaid hoodies, pants and blazers and all things suited and booted.
Brands like Ralph Lauren-purple label show us how refinement is done in menswear.
Refinement
Designers are tired of the street style trend, where sneakers are life and people don’t get dressed anymore when leaving their house. Now, I don’t think that people are going to line up to ditch their sneakers, but I do think that the refinement trend will help to polish some looks that people are choosing and the stores are stocking.
Priyanka Chopra showing us how refinement is done. This Jersey dress would pair well with any shoe, including sneakers or flats if you wanted to dress it down.
What trend are you dying to try? I love the refinement trend and pink, but then again any excuse to get dressed up and look nice will do for me.
